Many transnational corporations see the new democratic South Africa as a potential sub-imperial ally and spring-board for their own agenda in Africa. This developmental effort needs to focus upon both physical infrastructure and human resource development; policies that respect African social and cultural realities, without freezing these into some timeless and that has, in fact, already been distorted by colonialism and imperialism ; the fostering of democracy, peace and human rights - but these must not be imposed in formalistic ways that have little to do with the actual realities of our continent.
